Common Material Questions

These come up on almost every estimate visit. Short answers based on what we see in Central Florida homes.

Porcelain vs. Natural Stone for Florida Bathrooms

Porcelain

  • Handles Florida humidity well
  • No sealing required
  • Wide range of finishes and formats
  • Lower long-term maintenance

Natural Stone

  • Unique, no two slabs alike
  • Requires periodic sealing
  • More sensitive to acidic cleaners
  • Higher material and install cost

For most Florida bathrooms, porcelain is the practical choice. Natural stone is worth it when the look is a priority and the homeowner understands the upkeep. We talk through both during every estimate visit.

Epoxy Grout vs. Cement Grout

Epoxy Grout

  • Stain and chemical resistant
  • No sealing needed
  • Harder to work with during install
  • Higher cost, longer lasting

Cement Grout

  • Standard choice for most tile
  • Requires sealing to resist staining
  • Easier to work with
  • Lower upfront cost

For shower floors and kitchen backsplashes that see daily use, epoxy is worth the extra cost. For standard wall tile in lower-traffic areas, sealed cement grout performs well. We recommend based on your specific project.

Large-Format Tile vs. Standard Tile

Large-Format (24"+ )

  • Fewer grout lines, cleaner look
  • Makes small spaces feel larger
  • Requires flatter substrate prep
  • More labor-intensive to install

Standard (12x12 to 12x24)

  • Works on most existing substrates
  • Wider material selection
  • Better for floors with slope or grade
  • More forgiving to install

Large-format tile is one of the most common requests we get on higher-end remodels. The substrate has to be right for it to work. We assess the floor or wall condition during the estimate visit before recommending a tile size.

Go Board vs. Cement Board for Shower Walls

Go Board

  • 100% waterproof foam core
  • Lightweight, easy to cut and handle
  • Will not mold or rot if water gets behind tile
  • Our preferred shower substrate

Cement Board

  • Water-resistant, not waterproof
  • Can absorb moisture over time
  • Heavier and harder to work with
  • Requires a membrane over it in showers

Cement board is not inherently waterproof. In a shower, it still needs a membrane. Go Board skips that step because the panel itself is the waterproof layer. It's why we prefer it on shower builds, especially in Florida's humidity.
